Medgar Evers College

Medgar Evers College was established in 1970 with the help of educators and leaders in central Brooklyn. The school was named after Medgar Wiley Evers, a civil rights activist from Mississippi who helped many social and political advances for African Americans. He was assassinated in June 1963. The school is also part of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. The College is divided into four schools: The School of Liberal Arts and Education; The School of Professional & Community Development; and The School of Science, Health, and Technology. The College also features several programs and associated centers such as Male development and Empowerment Center, Center Black Literature, Center for Women's Development, and The DuBois Bunche Center for Public Policy.
The school is made up of 4 buildings. The Carroll Street Buidling in 1150 Carroll Street, a 4-story 152,000 square foot building, The Bedford Building in 1650 Bedford Avenue, a 3-story 130,000 square foot building and The S Building in 1637 Bedford Avenue, which is the School of Business and Student Support Services Building, a 3-story 44,950 square feet gross building. There is also the new Academic Building housing the sciences with a new cafeteria and the Edison O. Jackson auditorium which opened in 2010. Medgar Evers College also maintains other offices elsewhere in Brooklyn. Medgar Evers College, or MEC, has over 4,500 undergraduates.
Medgar Evers College awards baccalaureate degrees and associate degrees in various studies. They also offer a Licensed Practical Nursing certificate program they also have various courses and certificate programs through the Continuing Education part of its School of Professional and Community Development. The school colors are yellow and black and the school nickname are the Cougars.
